Dream Big: Your Goals CAN Change

by Rochelle Griffin

My husband had a dream last night. He heard the words “Ro 2.0” in it (Ro is my nickname.) When he told me this, I looked him oddly…wondering what he meant. He explained that in it, he saw me moving down a different path…a path of quality instead of quantity. Interesting dream to have, but in looking back over the past year, I can see exactly what he means.

One year ago, I was preparing to head to Vegas for the annual Beachbody Summit. It’s a weekend of learning, working out with celebrity trainers, and well…parties. It was a year ago that I was extremely focused on certain goals: being a certain weight (which I struggled to achieve and maintain) so I’d look good to be videoed for an informercial, being a certain rank so I could be on stage accepting honors of being an “elite” coach, being a certain body type so I could wear a bikini at the pool parties.

I was focused on quantity. I wanted to be a certain way to win prizes (which I did,) accolades (which I did,) and invites to parties (which I did.) Everything was tangible. I was specifically focused on achieving numbers.

Of course, when I was in the midst of it, I didn’t see it. I justified everything with the fact that I was trying to provide a great life for my family. What I failed to see was that my work had become my idol and my family was falling apart around me.

So here I sit, one week before we head to Vegas again for the annual Beachbody Summit, amazed how much can change over a year.

By the grace of God, my mentors helped me realize that I was focusing on quantity instead of quality. Ouch.

This year has been a year of growth and putting my priorities back in order. I’m no longer interested in rank, parties, or the size of my jeans in order to fit in with the crowd. I’m not working out like a fiend or eating restrictively these last few weeks before the trip to impress others. My focus has changed. By taking my eyes OFF of myself, life has begun to make sense again.

As a result, this year my health has improved. I’ve put healthy weight back on. My family is cohesive. My spiritual life is strong. I’m connected with thousands more people than I ever imagined I could have.

Another funny thing has happened as well…I’ve still advanced in rank, my income as increased, and my company has expanded as a by-product. My prior goals and dreams were nothing compared to what has become reality. I found that I wasn’t dreaming big enough nor was I allowing life to happen organically. By dreaming big, I realize that goals CAN change.

Why am I telling you these things? I’m telling you because I don’t want you to get caught in the same trap. Or if you are already in the snare, I want you to see that it’s ok to re-prioritize your life.

I encourage you to examine your motives for any of your goals. Be brutally honest with yourself. It’s only when you strip everything down to the basics that you’ll be able to see the “why” behind your actions. If they align with your core beliefs, it’s fantastic. If they don’t, NOW is the time to make adjustments…before you sacrifice pieces of your life that you never intended to.

Walking the Beaten Path: 3 Steps to Make Your Own Way

Walking the Beaten Path: 3 Steps to Make Your Own Way

by Rochelle Griffin

Is a picture worth a thousand words? Well this one is worth almost 700. Take a close look at the above picture. This is a picture my husband snapped this week while outside of our local grocery store. I find it absolutely fascinating and mind-provoking. At first glance, it’s simply a picture of a median in the parking lot with stepping-stones. On closer look, however, do you see how one side has a beaten path while the other side is covered in beautiful green grass?

For whatever reason, people walk on either side of the stepping-stones, then move onto the worn-down path. Isn’t that interesting?!?!?

I immediately was able to relate this to our lives…how people will walk down the same path as everyone else, even if it’s full of mud and puddles. People would rather get dirty than to follow what looks to be an uncertain path that hasn’t been created yet.

I’m here to say that walking the same path as everyone else isn’t always the best way, and I’ve personally never been a “follow the leader” kind of girl.

Think about it. Do you follow the same path as everyone else? In business? In your life?

And if your answer is yes, is it yes because it’s truly the right thing for you or is because of fear to do something different…of being different?

I mean if everyone is walking down the beaten path and you step over to the other side, won’t people potentially whisper about you, question your sanity, and ostracize you? The answer is yes, Yes, and YES. I know because I’ve lived it.

So let’s say that yes, you’ve been following the leader down the same dirty path as everyone else…and no, it’s not working for you. You are tired of coming home covered in mud. HOW do you do something different?

I am going to give you three tips and steps that I took, but I must warn you, walking in a place where there isn’t a path yet will be challenging. I can also tell you that forging your own way can be exhilarating and lead to more freedom than you’ve ever imagined.

Pray. Remember I’m only telling you what I did. I needed to get my priorities straight in my life. What was important? What was working? What wasn’t working? I needed to get real and then bring it before my God.

Find the right mentor/coach. Once I knew the direction that I wanted to move in, I needed help getting there. The path before me was grassy. I could see where I wanted to go but wasn’t sure where the pitfalls were. Finding a mentor who had walked a similar path was a breath of fresh air and gave me the confidence I needed to take the steps.

Put blinders on your eyes & fingers in your ears. Figuratively of course, but I promise, the moment that you step off of the path and into the grass, you’ll have plenty of naysayers talking about how you shouldn’t be doing what you’re doing. They may say it to your face or behind your back. This is where you’ll need to stay focused on where you are going. Referring back to my first 2 tips will also help you get through it.

As you begin to make your own way, don’t be surprised when something interesting starts to happen. People will watch…even the naysayers. People will see the freedom that you’ve created by doing what was right for your life.

Then slowly…tentatively at first, people will begin to step off of the muddy path that they’ve been on and give your path a try.

And when this happens, rejoice. Be careful that you don’t become smug. Help them instead find their way to a life of freedom as well…a life that they can build on their own terms, not someone else’s.

Swimming Your Way Out of Debt

June 6, 2013

Swimming Your Way Out of Debt by Rochelle Griffin When you look at your life today, are you happy with what you see? Or are you knee…even neck…deep in debt and can’t seem to get ahead? If you picked the latter, I want you to know that I understand. I want to share something today that I haven’t really talked about in detail publically before. In life, we tend to look at people as we see them today without thinking about what they’ve been through to get there. I didn’t wake up overnight with a successful business. Let’s go back [...]

A Beacon of Hope in Social Media

May 30, 2013

A Beacon of Hope in Social Media by Rochelle Griffin It’s been an interesting kind of day. I heard from many people on my Facebook page who said that they were inspired by the words I wrote AND I heard from someone who told me she’s fed up with my “religious” words. Both scenarios honestly made me smile and really brought home the fact that social media gives us each the unique ability to reach thousands and thousands of people. Do I write to be controversial? To offend? Of course not. Do I write what is laid on my heart? [...]

How the Internet Set Me Free

May 20, 2013

How the Internet Set Me Free by Rochelle Griffin Have you ever made a decision that people questioned you on, yet you knew in your heart it was the right one? I have. It was the day that I left my nursing career. I remember my family and friends questioning how I could leave such a lucrative career behind after spending so much time in school earning my BSN. After all, as a nurse, I’d never have to worry about having a J-O-B.  I knew that I was making the right decision, as scary as it was, because I was [...]

Stability or Gut: Which Should You Follow?

May 9, 2013

Stability or Gut: Which Should You Follow? by Rochelle Griffin Everyone craves stability…babies, children, and adults alike. As adults, stability often take the form of employment. We work, potentially for years, to build a solid foundation in either our jobs or our businesses. Is it ever too late to then change our focus? Even after all of the time that we invested into our current endeavor? I received a wonderful email this week from Marsha in response to my article about getting older. She wrote: “I have maintained a 100-pound weight loss for 40 years! I turned 65 in February, [...]

Rebel WITH a Cause: Being Who You Are Meant to Be

April 25, 2013

Rebel WITH a Cause: Being Who You Are Meant to Be   by Rochelle Griffin I have always had a rebellious streak and leader’s heart…two traits that one may consider polar opposites. I respectfully disagree. Growing up, if my mom told me to not do something, I was the kid who stuck her toe over the line just to see what would happen. Then regardless of the outcome, there was a good chance I’d step over the line again just because. Don’t get me wrong. I had a healthy respect for laws and wasn’t breaking any but I would definitely [...]

Breast Feeding, Diaper Changing, & Dependency in Business

April 22, 2013

Breast Feeding, Diaper Changing, & Dependency in Business by Rochelle Griffin Business owners, do you ever feel like you are breast feeding or changing diapers in business? There is a culture among direct sales companies to create dependency in the masses vs. raising up individual business leaders. I don’t think that people start out to initially become dependent nor do I think that leaders start out to make others dependent on them. Unfortunately it is the reality of what happens over time. The leaders tend to remain this “elite” group that the masses strive to be a part of but [...]
